Occupational Therapy Schools in South Carolina

The South Carolina state has 2 ACOTE accredited Occupational therapy Schools which provides an entry-level master degree or Doctor of Occupational therapy program. Plus, the state also has 4 ACOTE accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Schools which provides an associate degree. The license is required to practice as an OT in South Carolina; one can appear for the licensure examination after clearing the OT entry-level degree from accredited OT schools.

Occupational therapy in South Carolina-

The occupational therapist, Occupational therapy assistant, and OT/OTA students have their own state association, i.e. SCOTA (South Carolina Occupational Therapy Association).

The SCOTA is a non-profit volunteer organization which provides a professional community for its members. The SCOTA is a state-based professional organization and public voice for the occupational therapy profession in South Carolina.

The main role of the association is to promote the occupational therapy profession, create public awareness, provide support to the therapist in continuing education and improve and maintain the quality of occupational therapy profession in the state of South Carolina. The SCOTA is an affiliated state body of the American Occupational therapy association.

Occupational therapy License in South Carolina-

Occupational therapist and Occupational therapy Assistants are required to get a license from the South Carolina Board of Occupational Therapy.

Satisfactory completion of both the academic program and fieldwork are required to be eligible to take the Certification Examination of the NBCOT and get license offered by the South Carolina Board of Occupational Therapy. Successful completion of the licensure test allows graduates to practice the profession in South Carolina.

The minimum requirements for the license are –

  • Entry level master degree or OTD degree
  • NBCOT exam’s passing certificate.
  • Application fees of $135(OT) and $115 (OTA).

Temporary OT/OTA License:

A temporary license to practice as an occupational therapist (OT) or as an occupational therapy assistant (OTA) may be granted to persons who have completed the educational and experience requirements for licensure and are waiting to take or receive the results of the certification examination. Temporary licenses may be renewed once in the discretion of the board, upon good cause shown.

#1 Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)

The Occupational Therapy Schools at MUSC offers entry-level Occupational Therapy Doctorate degree (OTD-entry level). The OT school is no more offering a Master of Science in occupational therapy and upgraded its program into OTD. The OTD students will be admitted from May 2019.

The OT school’s Inter-professional education is a hallmark of the program and involves connections with other health professionals across the campus and in the community. The school has a good reputation and ranked #17 nationally by U.S. News and World Report. The school has state-of-the-art labs and facilities.

Students get more exposure to learning at CARES (Community Aid Relief Education Support). It’s the Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy clinic, which is an MUSC student-run free clinic.

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) results;
  • Completed plans for remaining year form;
  • Minimum of a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale
  • Supplemental profile form
  • Log of Occupational Therapy related experience
  • A Resume.

#2 Lenoir-Rhyne University (Columbia Campus, SC)

In 2016 the Lenoir-Rhyne University had started a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program in South Carolina through Distance learning. Lecture classes are provided through live interactive video networking, while lab and specialty classes are held separately at CGSC. The CGSC location has full-time faculty who are licensed occupational therapists.
