Occupational Therapy Schools in Maryland

The Maryland state has only 1 ACOTE accredited Occupational therapy School, which provides an entry-level master degree. Plus, the state also has 3 ACOTE accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Schools which provides an associate degree. The license is required to practice as an OT or OTA in the state of Maryland and it’s compulsory for the graduates of OT schools to apply for the licensure.

The only Occupational therapy school (M.S.OT) in Maryland is  Towson University.

Occupational therapy in Maryland-

The occupational therapist, Occupational therapy assistant, and OT/OTA students have their own state association, i.e. MOTA (Maryland Occupational Therapy Association).

The MOTA is a non-profit volunteer organization which provides a professional community for its members. The MOTA is a state-based professional organization and public voice for the occupational therapy profession in Maryland.

The main role of the association is to promote the occupational therapy profession, create public awareness, provide support to the therapist in continuing education and improve and maintain the quality of occupational therapy profession in the state of Maryland. The MOTA is an affiliated state body of the American Occupational therapy association.

Occupational therapy License in Maryland-

Occupational therapist and Occupational therapy Assistants are required to get a license from the Maryland Board of Occupational therapy practice.

The minimum requirements for the license are –

  • Entry level master degree or OTD degree
  • NBCOT exam’s passing certificate.
  • Application fees of $200.

Temporary OT/OTA Permit:

A temporary permit to practice as an occupational therapist (OT) or as an occupational therapy assistant (OTA) in Maryland may be granted to persons who have completed the educational and experience requirements for licensure and are waiting to take or receive the results of the certification examination. The limited permit is valid for 6 months or until the date on which the results of the certification examination are made available.

The Occupational therapy profession has deep roots in Maryland. Many founder members of the occupational therapy profession belong to Maryland like former home of Eleanor Clark Slagle, one of the founders of the profession (John Hopkins Hospital ) and workplace of William Rush Dunton, another founder of the profession (Sheppard Enoch Pratt Hospital).

The OT school is providing Occupational therapy education from the last 43 years (started in 1974). Since then, Towson University has been graduating successful candidates to become certified occupational therapists.

The Occupational Therapy school is equipped with modern classrooms, learning laboratories and a resource center, which includes research software.

The Occupational Therapy school @ Towson University offers the following programs:

Occupational Therapy Combined B.S./M.S. program-

The OT school offers combined B.S./M.S for the high school passed students, This combined program helps the students to complete graduation in minimal time.

Pre-Occupational Therapy-

This program helps the students to fulfill the admission requirements and learn the basics of occupational therapy. This course is good for freshman and transfer students.

Occupational Therapy (M.S.) Program-

A bachelor’s degree holder in any field can take admission into the M.S.OT program after fulfilling the prerequisite coursework.

Occupational Science Doctoral Program (Sc.D.)

An individual having a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy or a related field may be eligible to apply for the Doctoral Program in Occupational Science. This program is a post-professional program, designed to prepare graduates to assume key roles in teaching, research, and/or clinical practice.

***Latest update- Recently, the OT school has applied for the Entry level Doctor of Occupational Therapy program. The current status of the program is having “applicant” status by the ACOTE of AOTA.

The outlook for occupational therapy employment is very good in Maryland. The United States’s Bureau of Labor Statistics includes occupational therapy as one of its fastest-growing occupations, with registered occupational therapists predicted to have a faster than average growth (21- 36%). Many Health Care Recruitment providers have reported a shortage of occupational therapists and OTA in Maryland.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were about 2,710 employed and licensed occupational therapists in Maryland in May 2016 and the requirement of license practitioner is increasing. Huge opportunities are there in Maryland for the occupational therapist and occupational therapy Assistant.

As per indeed.com, the average salary for an occupational therapist in Maryland was $87,000 per annum (in 2016) and According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual and hourly income of occupational therapy professionals were $86,170 and $42.16, respectively in May 2016.
