Occupational Therapy Schools in Houston, TX

Occupational therapy schools in Houston play an important role in the field of occupational therapy. The Houston has two OT schools, which provides entry-level master degree in occupational therapy. The one Institute is in the heart of Houston, while another one is near to Houston i.e. at Galveston. Houston also has three occupational therapy assistant schools.

Houston- General Information

Houston is the most populous city in the state of Texas and the fourth-most populous city in the United States. Houston is famous for health care education in the world.

Houston is the home of the Texas Medical Center—the largest medical center in the world. The Texas Medical Center contains 54 medicine-related institutions, with 21 hospitals and eight specialty institutions, eight academic and research institutions, four medical schools, seven nursing schools, three public health organizations, 2 pharmacy schools and a dental school.

All 54 institutions are not-for-profit. Among the affiliated medical schools are the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Baylor College of Medicine, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (one of the best OT school) and Texas A&M College of Medicine.

Occupational therapy in Houston-

The occupational therapy services are easily available in Houston. Houston has many big hospital and therapy centers, which provides occupational therapy services.

The Texas Occupational Therapy Association (TOTA)-

The occupational therapist and occupational therapist assistant have their own association in Texas, which provide basic support to the OT, OTA, and students of OT or OTA program.

There is no separate OT association in Houston, everybody joins the membership of state-based association i.e. TOTA.

The total membership in TOTA stands at approximately 1600, which includes occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and OT or OTA students.

Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners (TBOTE)-

The TBOTE is the licensing authority for the occupational therapist and occupational therapy assistant in Houston, Texas.

Approximately 9,790 occupational therapists and 5,461 occupational therapy assistants are currently licensed by the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners.

Temporary License-

The TBOTE may provide a temporary license to the OT and OTA. A temporary license is only available to the candidate who is appearing the NBCOT exam for the first time and has never held a license in any US State, territory, or foreign country for OT practice.

An Occupational Therapist with a temporary license must have on-the-premises supervision by an OT with a regular license.

#2 University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston (UTMB)-

The UTMB is recently ranked by the US News & World Report as the top MOT program in the state. The UTMB provides state-of-the-art facilities to the students. One of the best occupational therapy school in the USA.

There are two ACOTE’s accredited OTA programs are running in Houston. They provide an associate degree in occupational therapy assistant.

OTA applicant school-

One new OTA school has been applied for the ACOTE’s accreditation in Houston. This new OTA program has been granted an “applicant” status by AOTA’s ACOTE. Until Candidacy Status has been granted by ACOTE, this program cannot admit students into the OTA program.
