Occupational Therapy Schools in Maine

The Maine state has 3 ACOTE accredited Occupational therapy Schools which provides an entry-level master degree or Doctor of Occupational therapy (OTD). Plus, the state also has 1 ACOTE accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Schools which provides an associate degree. The license is required to practice as an OT or OTA in the state of Maine and it’s compulsory for the graduates of OT schools to apply for the licensure.

Occupational therapy in Maine-

The occupational therapist, Occupational therapy assistant, and OT/OTA students have their own state association, i.e. MeOTA (Maine Occupational Therapy Association).

The MeOTA is a non-profit volunteer organization which provides a professional community for its members. The MeOTA is a state-based professional organization and public voice for the occupational therapy profession in Maine.

The main role of the association is to promote the occupational therapy profession, create public awareness, provide support to the therapist in continuing education and improve and maintain the quality of occupational therapy profession in the state of Maine. The MeOTA is an affiliated state body of the American Occupational therapy association.

Occupational therapy License in Maine-

Occupational therapist and Occupational therapy Assistants are required to get a license from Maine’s Board of Occupational Therapy Practice.

The minimum requirements for the license are-

  • Entry-level master degree or OTD degree
  • NBCOT exam’s passing certificate.
  • Application fees of $100.

Temporary OT/OTA License:

 A temporary license to practice as an occupational therapist (OT) or as an occupational therapy assistant (OTA) may be granted to persons who have completed the educational and experience requirements for licensure and are waiting to take or receive the results of the certification examination. The temporary license is issued for a period of six (6) months, but it may be renewed for an additional six (6) months at the discretion of the Board.

#1 Husson University

The OT school offers an entry-level Master of Science in Occupational therapy. The school also offers a combined BS/MS program for the students. This BS/MS program leads to a BS in Healthcare Studies and an entry-level Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy. It’s a 5-year program.

The OT school has various state-of-the-art labs for occupational therapy students. It includes excellent ADL room, digital classroom, and Dahl Anatomy lab. Recently, the OT school has applied for the entry-level Doctor of Occupational therapy (OTD) program. ACOTE’s status for OTD- Applicant.

#3 University of Southern Maine at Lewiston-Auburn College

The OT school offers Master of Occupational therapy – entry level program. Along with this, the school also offers MOT Accelerated Pathway.

The accelerated pathway is for the current USM students. It’s a 4+1 year fast track program. Participation in the accelerated pathway option DOES NOT guarantee admission to the MOT program.
