Accelerated Occupational Therapy Programs

The meaning of Accelerate is fast and quick. Similarly, accelerated occupational therapy programs are designed to make the process of occupational therapy education fast.

The admission process in the occupational therapy profession is slow. First, clear the baccalaureate degree in a related field or unrelated field, then do some prerequisite course and then apply for MOT programs. It may take 6-7 years after high school.

So, some universities or OT schools make it fast by providing a combined degree to speed up the process. These courses are available in many universities. Some OT schools called it, as an accelerated occupational therapy program, some called it a Fast track occupational therapy program or combined BS/MS occupational therapy program.

A typical entry-level master degree in occupational therapy program is about 2-3 years. It takes around 6-7 years to enter the occupational therapy profession as a licensed practitioner.

The accelerated occupational therapy programs cut down the OT education years and provide fast and quick occupational therapy degree in 4.5 to 5 years.

Pros of accelerated occupational therapy programs-

• Fast and quick
• Eligible for NBCOT examination in 5 years.
• No need for a separate application for the master degree.
• No need to change the college/ school.
• Less fees structure.

Cons of accelerated occupational therapy programs-

• Few number of accelerated OT program.

The all entry-level professional combined Bachelor of Science/Master of Occupational Therapy (BS/MS) programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association.

The accelerated bachelor’s to master’s degree (BS to MS) opportunity is afforded to those few high school students who already know that they want to pursue a career as an occupational therapist.

Occupational Therapy BS/MS Degree General Admission Requirements-

• This program is meant for the high school freshman.
• Students must demonstrate successful completion of high school math and science courses.
• Grades should be B level or better for consideration.
• The Science courses considered for acceptance must have been taken within 5 years of the student’s application to the OT Program.
• Minimum 3-3.5 High School GPA
• An ACT score of 24-26 or greater (cumulative)

These requirements are general in nature, each school has its own minimum requirements. So, you can check the individual OT school for admission’s minimum requirement.

License after accelerated fast track combined BS/MS program-

After graduating from the accelerated occupational therapy program, the graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of the NBCOT exam, the graduates will be an occupational therapist, registered (OTR). Most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state license eligibility is usually based on the results of the NBCOT certification examination.

*NOTE-

Some school does not guarantee the admission in the MSOT program after completing the Bachelor program from the same school. While some school provides a guaranteed admission in the Master degree program after Bachelor from the same school.
